Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL)

In the fall of 2015, the Council of Chief State School Operators (CCSSO) released new standards for educational leaders. The 2015 Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (formerly ISLLC) provide guidance for school and district leaders to support school-wide student learning. And, after spending some time studying these new standards, the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL) Team recognized an alignment of the CALL constructs to these new educational leadership standards.

Refreshed Focus on Instructional Leadership

The new standards consistently emphasize that within the various aspects of school leadership practice, school leaders always need to consider student learning first and foremost. Given CALL’s consistent focus on instructional leadership, it was not a surprise to see the alignment between the CALL Domains and the educational leadership standards. In addition, leadership preparation programs are using CALL to support and train pre-service principals; given the alignment of CALL to the standards most commonly used in school leadership preparation, this tool has become a great fit for this purpose.

CALL’s alignment to these standards reveals multiple justifications for using this tool, whether it be for supporting school leaders, training aspiring principals, or engaging in school improvement planning.
