CALL and the Four Domains for Rapid School Improvement

THE FOUR DOMAINS/CALL SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM

The Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL), in collaboration with WestEd, has developed a version of the CALL assessment and feedback system that measures specific practices within the Four Domains for Rapid School Improvement framework.

This framework, developed by the Center on School Turnaround at West-Ed, outlines the key practices for successful school turnaround in four critical focus areas: turnaround leadership, talent development, instructional transformation, and culture shift.

CALL CHARACTERISTICS

This version of CALL maintains the unique qualities that have supported school improvement and leadership development since CALL was created and validated at the University of Wisconsin.

As a school improvement system, CALL utilizes a distributed leadership approach to inquiry, by acknowledging that leadership is not confined to just one person in a school or district. Rather, CALL focuses on the work that various people do throughout a school or district. As a result, school and district leaders receive action-based data to support district-wide school improvement planning.

ACTION-BASED DATA ON THE FOUR DOMAINS

The Four Domains version of CALL is a needs-assessment that measures key practices within each of the Four Domains at the school and district levels. This is done through an online survey that is easy to implement, and that is taken by educators and leaders throughout a school or district.

Once the survey is complete, school and district leaders have immediate access to the resulting action-based data. The Four Domains/CALL feedback system identifies areas of strength and focus areas that guide school and district leaders’ strategic improvement planning.

A TOOL FOR DISTRICT LEADERS TO SUPPORT DISTRICT-WIDE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

District leaders can assess their own leadership practices through the district-level Four Domains/CALL assessment. And, they can view their schools’ data through an aggregate view in the feedback system. With this function, district leaders can identify district-wide trends to inform resource allocation and specific professional development needs. Also, a pre- and post-assessment can be administered to monitor progress on implementing change strategies.

OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT SCHOOL LEADERS BEYOND COMPLIANCE ALONE

The developers of the Four Domains/CALL system worked to create a feedback system that not only provides action-based data, but also provides evidence-based strategies and suggestions to support school and district leaders’ improvement work.

Today, there are numerous demands being placed on districts and schools to improve, and educational leaders are facing increased expectations to produce positive changes in student learning outcomes. But these demands can also provide leaders with an opportunity to improve schools well beyond compliance alone.
